The Paper Tigers Keep on Roaring
Originally founded as Howard Zuker Associates in 1967, The Paper Tigers, a paper and pulp brokerage company, has grown to become a leader in the industry both domestically and internationally. Dealing in all grades of secondary fiber and pulp substitutes, they have been involved in Asia and other export markets since the 1970s. In the late 1960s, they began to broker pre-consumer polycoated board, which was then becoming the standard over wax (cartons have not been made of wax-coated paperboard for many years). With encouragement from Tetra Pak, Paper Tigers began to broker post-consumer polycoated cartons, including all sizes of gable top and aseptic cartons, in 1998. One of the first to deal with post-consumer polycoated board, Paper Tigers recognized its value as a steadily available, low-cost fiber for mills. In addition, the long, clean fibers are bright and strong, making it unique amongst other post-consumer grades.

Nick Halper, Vice President of The Paper Tigers, has seen recycling, specifically paper recycling, change over the years. "Like any industry, the paper industry has seen a lot of consolidation with mergers and acquisitions with waste paper packers and brokers over the years." Paper Tigers' market experience, financial strength and long-standing relationship with their customers allows them to offer competitive pricing on a consistent basis regardless of market conditions. The company is willing to do long term agreements with a guaranteed floor price as they have offered in the past. They can also pick up on a steady basis without an agreement, and although they are occasionally out a week or two, the usual pick up time is 48 hours. Interested processors and recycling coordinators should contact Dave Fackler, Traffic Manager at
dfackler@papertigers.com (direct line: 847-919-6568 or fax: 847-919-6501) for current pricing.

For the future, Nick feels that the Asian markets will continue to see the most rapid growth in the paper markets. The export business has grown more each year, while the domestic business has been shrinking with the closing of mills. The US and Europe are mature markets, but the demand is growing in China with a huge growth in mills, as well as in India. New equipment being installed by the mills in these markets are allowing them to catch up. Their techniques are getting better, so they are making a better end product. Nick also feels that there is a need for new packaging from renewable resources. "I hope that the packaging of the future will be made out of paper as opposed to plastic and things that are not (renewable)."
